What is identified nouns and quantified nouns? Before we start, I would like to to know about a class of words which is called determiners.
To start with a few examples, here is a list of some of some very short sentences that contain a noun and a determiner. The noun is printed in italics;the determiner is printed in bold.
The dog barked My garden was flooded This drink is very bitter A mistake has been made Those cows are far away One of the surest ways of telling a noun is its ability to combine with words such as the, this, these,a,some, any, enough, etc. These words belong to a class called determiners.
What is the job of determiners?
Their structural job is to ‘determine’ the noun that follows them. Some determiners do this by identifying the noun and some do it by quantifying it. Here is a figure that contains the examples of both of them.
